Long exposures of a waterfall

A cold swim below Cucumber Falls 

This waterfall is within an easy drive from my house.  Flowing water makes for good long exposure photos.  As I was framing up this shot and fiddling with my settings the young man you see in the water came scrambling across the rocks and politely asked if I would mind if he went for a swim.  I said, no, not as long as you don't mind me taking a picture of you suffering in the water.  He said no he did not mind and there's the photo.
As someone that has swam in a mountain stream in early spring I can defiantly say this young fellow is learning the true meaning of a cold, cold bath.  
   Also, I want to credit Pieter Bruegel’s painting, Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus as an inspiration for the framing of this photo.

A Flash Modifier For Shooting Macro I call it a flash pipe. It is an antiseptic wipe dispenser with the branding peeled off and lined with aluminum foil.  There was a flip lid that I broke off and the resulting opening is as good a fit as I could hope for on my cheap, generic flash.  I glued the foil in with Elmer's Contact Cement after I roughed up the inside with course sand paper. This is a macro shot taken with a homemade flash modifier. The objective of the project was to get the light output past the end of the lens. The dispenser is an opaque plastic that can act as a diffuser.  Notice the shadows in the upper edge of the SONY letters.  The light is shining from directly above the subject. This is the dispenser mounted to my flash unit. This shot was taken with the flash mounted on a light stand. Every now and then I take a picture that rocks. It doesn't happen often. Quite often I have to overlook a flaw and just be satisfied with what I like about the picture. This is one such shot. It has everything I was looking for anytime I'm taking pictures of family. There's expression, joy, emotion and spontaneity. That is one of the best looks I have ever gotten from any small child. Yet, there is also a serious flaw. The shot is out of focus and grainy (noisy in digital photography speak). With this picture I finally learned my lesson about using a manual focus lens to take pictures of a fast moving small child.

 The Grand Kids Humor Me. I read a post on Flickr about re-creating a photo from Flickr Commons as part of the thirteenth anniversary of that feature of Flickr.  The commons is a collection of photos from public archives that are stored on Flickr and on public display.  A list of pictures was suggested and one of them struck me as something in which I could find a personal connection.  This picture is of two cousins and was taken in 1918 during the Spanish flu pandemic.  My mother's father was ten years old in 1918 and survived that horrendous event to live into his nineties.  Our two grand sons are five and eleven now and are living through these difficult times the same way as most other children this age.  I interrupted their usual video game play in order to take the photo below and they played along because they're good kids.   So there they are at the beginning of their century, posing close to the way the two Florida boys were in 191...
